ETC: nell’ultimo trimestre del 2024 gli arrivi stranieri in Europa sono cresciuti del 6,7% circa, ma le prospettive per il futuro sono incerte

  • Laura Alese - Federturismo Confindustria
  • 24 Febbraio 2025
🏖️ European tourism in Q4 2024 saw a +6.7% increase in foreign arrivals and a +4.8% rise in overnight stays compared to Q3 2023. Tourists spent 7.8% more in Europe in 2024, totaling €705 billion, with Western Europe driving nearly three-quarters of the regional expenditure. Despite geopolitical instability and high travel costs due to inflation, off-season and winter travel remained strong. Southern Europe's tourism growth slowed, while Northern Europe, especially Iceland with a +14% increase in arrivals in Q4 driven by natural attractions like the aurora boreale, gained popularity. Extreme weather events affected travel, notably in Spain's Valencia province, causing a slump in growth (-4.2% in November, -6.3% in December). Long-haul travel from Asia/Pacific, particularly China, is still -39.6% below pre-Covid levels, while US transatlantic trips mostly surpassed 2019 levels, with Turkey (+153%), Portugal (+91%), and Montenegro (+49%) leading the recovery.

  • 24 Febbraio 2025
🏖️ European Tourism Commission (ETC) reports a 6.7% increase in foreign arrivals and a 4.8% increase in overnight stays in Q4 2024 compared to Q4 2023. Tourists spent 7.8% more in 2024, reaching €705 billion, driven by Western Europe. ETC notes off-peak travel is popular for its value, with consistent levels even during shoulder (Sep-Oct) and winter seasons. However, summer extremes and fewer travelers affected travel patterns. Southern European tourism slowed, while Northern Europe saw a rise due to natural attractions like the aurora borealis. Q4 2024 saw slower performance in Southern and Mediterranean destinations, but Italy reversed the trend with a 5.9% increase in arrivals and 10% more overnight stays compared to Q4 2019. Iceland became the fastest-growing winter destination with a 14% increase in arrivals from 2019. Extreme weather events impacted travel, causing delays and cancellations across Europe. Valencia's severe floods in November and December reduced Spain's arrival growth by 4.2% and 6.3%, respectively. Long-haul travel to Europe remains 5% below 2019 levels, largely due to slow Asian recovery, particularly China, which is 39.6% below pre-Covid levels. US transatlantic travel aids the post-pandemic recovery, with 22 out of 27
