Lavoro, Santanchè: “Turismo genera 13% occupazione”

🏖 In 2024, Italian tourism generated 13% of employment, with forecasts of nearly 16% by 2034, according to ENIT. The Government Meloni's strategy and the Ministry of Tourism's measures aim to revive the sector and create over one million jobs. Achievements include an 80% implementation of the tourism program, reducing job shortages from 350,000 in 2022 to approximately 260,000. UNIONCAMERE estimates a demand for 551,000 to 683,000 workers in the next five years, about 18% of total needs. ISTAT reported nearly 2 million tourism-related jobs in 2024, a 2% increase from 2023, with over 458 million tourist presences. The overall tourism employment exceeds 3 million, with substantial growth into 2025.

🏖 Italy tops Virtuoso's Luxe Report 2025 as the Top Global Destination and preferred honeymoon spot, beating Greece, France, Japan, Croatia, with Rome among favored cities, surpassing London and Tokyo. In 2024, shopping tourists exceeded 2 million, up 7% from pre-Covid times, contributing over €2.5 billion directly to Italy's GDP. Shopping tourism's projected value is set to reach $327.8 billion globally by 2027. The US remains a key market for Italy, with over 4 million visitors in 2024, accounting for 4.6% of total international arrivals and spending roughly €6.5 billion. A 10.7% increase in US travelers to Italian airports is expected between April and September 2025, totaling 1.65 million passengers. Similarly, a 10.6% rise in Latin American travelers is forecasted for the same period in 2025, with 334,200 passengers anticipated.

✈ European passenger traffic maintained a positive momentum in Q1 of 2025, growing by +4.3% compared to the same period last year. This marks a slowdown from a +10.2% growth in Q1 2024 compared to Q1 2023. International traffic led the growth in 2025's Q1 at +5.7%, while domestic traffic remained unchanged at 0%. Compared to pre-pandemic levels (Q1 2019), international passenger traffic in Q1 2025 reached +8.9%, but domestic traffic was down by -12.8%. Monthly year-on-year growth decelerated in Q1 2025, from +6.9% in January to +3.4% in February and +3% in March. Despite an increasingly challenging economic context, consumer demand for travel experiences has remained resilient.

The average stay was three nights for nationals and four for foreigners, indicating growth. Notably, 600,000 stays were recorded in 26,000 agritourism establishments.

Singles, especially those between 35-55 years old, possess more free time and economic resources. Despite a 4.3% increase in average monthly consumption to €2,738 and a nominal annual family income rise to €37,511 in 2023, real terms saw a 1.6% decline. Yet, singles maintain strong spending capacity, making them valuable for the travel industry, particularly for cultural, sports, wellness, and social experiences.

Mastercard: lo shopping vale il 24% della spesa totale effettuata dai turisti

💰 In 2024, shopping in Italy saw a positive trend with 24% of total tourist spending. International tourists contributed 51%, with clothing purchases leading at 70%. Lombardy, particularly Milan, accounted for nearly 30% of shopping expenditure. American tourists spent the most outside of Arab and Asian visitors, with their spending up 10% from 2023. Central Italy's regions Tuscany and Lazio contributed 35%. Overall, shopping growth was 18%, with domestic spending up 22-24% and international up 13%. U.S., Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, and the UK were the main shoppers, with U.S. tourists making up 20% of international shopping and the highest average spending over 120 euros. Turkish shoppers' spending surged by 70%, while spending from the UAE grew by 22%. Mastercard's analysis highlighted seasonal and merchandise trends, with Americans favoring late spring to early summer and September-October for their shopping trips in Italy.

🏨 During the 2025 Salone del Mobile in Milan, Tax Free shopping saw a 77% increase over the prior three weeks and a 93% surge from the year's weekly average. Despite a general spending drop of 15% and a 9% decrease in average receipt from 2024, this period generated unparalleled expenditure volumes. Chinese shoppers, top spenders at 15%, showed a 49% decrease in spending, while spending by Arab clients rose by 27%, making them the second-highest spenders at 14%, coinciding with Ramadan's end. Americans were third at 12%. Via Montenapoleone accounted for one-third of total Tax Free spending, maintaining stable volumes and witnessing a 9% average receipt increase from the previous year. Global Blue added three kiosks at Malpensa Airport to manage increased tourist flows.
