🏖️ The tourism sector in Italy reached an agreement for a national contract renewal for employees, effective July 1, 2024, until December 31, 2027. Confesercenti, along with unions Filcams-Cgil, Fisascat-Cisl, and Uiltucs, signed the proposal. Associations such as Assoturismo, Fiepet, Assohotel, Assoviaggi, Assocamping, and Fiba aim to unify the sector under one contract. The new contract includes a €200 salary increase, welfare improvements, term contract enhancements for hotels and campsites, measures against gender violence, and a national joint commission for workplace health and safety by the end of 2024.

🏨 In 2023, dependency on online travel agencies (OTAs) for hotels increased to 29.1%, up from 19.3% in 2013. Booking.com dominates with a 71% share of OTA hotel sales in Europe, an 11% increase since 2013. Expedia and HRS trail with 14.4% and 16.6% shares respectively. Small hotels with under 20 rooms are particularly affected, with 27% distributing 30-49% of their rooms through OTAs, and another 27% selling more than half. Direct bookings peaked in 2021 at 59.7%, but fell to 55% in 2023.

Price increases (57.5%) and reduced quality of life for residents (43.6%) are significant impacts. Solutions proposed include promoting lesser-known destinations (49.3%), visitor quotas (42.1%), responsible tourist behavior (40.4%), and eco-friendly activities (39%). Furthermore, 87.8% prefer less crowded places, 86.8% are willing to travel off-peak, and 82.7% would choose locations less visible on social media to avoid 'hit-and-run' tourism.

Over a quarter of air bookings were domestic (26%), with a growing US tourist share (from 10% to 13%). Rome (32%), Milan (25%), Venice (7%), Naples (5%), and Catania (5%) were the preferred airport hubs.

Domestic travel dominates at 75%, with a preference for urban tourism in cities like London, Paris, Tokyo, Madrid, and Rome during summer and mid-season months. Safety is a crucial factor. Spanish, Italian, and Japanese women often travel abroad, with 48% of Spanish, 36% of Italian, and 34% of Japanese booking international destinations.
