☕ Over 20 SCA (Specialty Coffee Association) Italian judges from various regions participated in an exclusive workshop at the Simonelli Group Campus to delve into the latest calibration techniques for coffee competitions. The event is vital for continuous judge training, ensuring high and consistent standards. Fabio Sipione, coordinator of SCA Italy judges, emphasized the importance of ongoing training for the upcoming SCA regional championships. Alberto Polojac, the new coordinator of SCA Italy, highlighted the rising level of international competitions and the prowess of Italian competitors, attributing success to the well-trained judges. The workshop focused on new Latte Art calibration rules and Coffee in Good Spirits (CGIS) calibration. Marco Feliziani, CEO of Simonelli Group, expressed pride in hosting the SCA Italy-organized workshop, reflecting the company's commitment to knowledge sharing and constant updating.

Associazione Maestri dell’Espresso Napoletano: una giornata di confronto e scoperta del caffè in cialda

☕ On September 9, an original coffee event took place in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius, organized by the Associazione Maestri dell’Espresso Napoletano led by President Francesco Costanzo. At the event, coffee experts Andrej Godina and Mauro Illiano tasted 17 different coffee references across six different pod machines, totaling 102 sensory responses. The "La Piccola" machine from Carpenedolo (BS), made in Italy by Gianluca Venturelli, was highly praised, along with machines from Spinel and Aroma. The event highlighted the espresso's complexity and the need for consumer education, with the same pod producing different flavors on different machines. Among the coffees tested, notable mentions include "Pulcinella" by Lucaffè, "Espresso Napoletano Formula Bar" by Kimbo, and "Arabica Top Selection" by Kremoso.

Vino. Numeri in calo nel primo semestre. Segnali di ripresa arrivano dall'estero

🍷 In the first half of 2024, Italian retail wine sales volume decreased nearly 3% from 2023, while sales value increased by just under 1%. Economic uncertainty impacted consumer spending, slowing Horeca channel food & beverage growth to 4.5% in Q2 2024 from 7% in Q1. Despite a 4% drop in global wine imports, Italian wines performed well in the U.S. (+5.7%), UK (+4.7%), Canada (+1.3%), and Brazil, with a downturn in Germany (-9%). Italian still and sparkling wines saw a -2% drop, but sparkling wines increased 4.5% in value compared to the first half of 2023. Prosecco exports grew by 12% and Tuscan reds Dop by 6%, while Piedmontese reds Dop decreased by 2%. French wines experienced a 10% export value drop, notably Champagne (-17%) and Bordeaux reds (-16%), while Australian wines rebounded by 28%, offsetting previous declines minus China.
