Biorepack. Caffè in capsula: la transizione verso il compostabile supporta i consumatori e migliora la gestione dei rifiuti
☕ During the 11th TriestEspresso Expo, Biorepack highlighted compostable solutions for Italy’s beloved beverage, coffee. Data from Mediobanca 2022 indicates 43% of roasted coffee sold in Italy is in single-use capsules (37%) and pods (6%). Globally, AMI Consulting reports 80 billion coffee capsules are sold annually, expected to exceed 90 billion within five years, with Europe consuming 50 billion and Italy 2.8 billion. Only 6% of used capsules are compostable, versus 22% aluminum and 72% plastic. Biorepack General Director, Carmine Pagnozzi, stresses the importance of proper disposal and composting of coffee waste to return organic substance to agricultural land. Novamont and Fi-Plast have invested in compostable capsule technologies and materials, contributing to a circular economy and maintaining product quality. GISE, a Bolognese startup, presented its compostable capsule in 2022, emphasizing sustainability and consumer interest in reducing environmental impact.
