🏨 In 2023, dependency on online travel agencies (OTAs) for hotels increased to 29.1%, up from 19.3% in 2013. Booking.com dominates with a 71% share of OTA hotel sales in Europe, an 11% increase since 2013. Expedia and HRS trail with 14.4% and 16.6% shares respectively. Small hotels with under 20 rooms are particularly affected, with 27% distributing 30-49% of their rooms through OTAs, and another 27% selling more than half. Direct bookings peaked in 2021 at 59.7%, but fell to 55% in 2023.

Popular crowded sites include Piazza San Marco, the Colosseum, and Trevi Fountain. Key issues are feeling overwhelmed by crowds (31.7%) and observing litter at tourist sites (48%). Price increases (57.5%) and reduced quality of life for residents (43.6%) are significant impacts. Solutions proposed include promoting lesser-known destinations (49.3%), visitor quotas (42.1%), responsible tourist behavior (40.4%), and eco-friendly activities (39%). Furthermore, 87.8% prefer less crowded places, 86.8% are willing to travel off-peak, and 82.7% would choose locations less visible on social media to avoid 'hit-and-run' tourism.

🏖️ According to the Visa Travellers Survey by Visa and Ipsos, 77% of Italians plan to vacation within Italy in the next 12 months, with 550 participants surveyed. While 49% will visit other European countries, with Spain (32%) and France (21%) being top choices, 55% prefer the USA for trips outside Europe, and Japan leads in Asia. Most departures occur in July and August, with 40% heading to "iconic" cities, 38% pursuing cultural interests, and another 38% choosing seaside locations. The average Italian plans to spend 1,418 euros per person, allocating more for Europe (1,323 euros) and even higher for trips outside Europe (2,719 euros), compared to 1,053 euros within Italy. Half of the Italians (51%) will finance their vacations using credit cards (54%), bank credit lines (27%), travel agency financing (17%), or Buy now pay later options (16%). Digital payments for travel are preferred by 60% of respondents, especially for overseas trips (39%), valuing convenience (69%), security (47%), and speed (44%). 🏖️ In Italy, June's online accommodation saturation rate reached nearly 36%, a 2% increase from May. Short-term rentals hit approximately 39%. Preference was shown for art cities (50%), lakeside (47%), and spa (45%) locations. Despite a 10% price hike from the previous year, Italy's average nightly rate remained competitive at €134. Top saturation rates were in Lazio (61%), Veneto (56%), Friuli-Venezia Giulia (54%), and Tuscany (52%), with Rome (62%), Venice (61%), and Florence (58%) leading in attraction. Over a quarter of air bookings were domestic (26%), with a growing US tourist share (from 10% to 13%). Rome (32%), Milan (25%), Venice (7%), Naples (5%), and Catania (5%) were the preferred airport hubs.

European and North American ticket prices have risen 9-12% from 2019, with airlines facing operational challenges such as technical issues with the Gtf engine and delivery delays, notably of the B737Max. Airlines are expected to see a 10% global net profit increase over 2019 figures, with Europe at 5%. Low-cost carriers have expanded market share in Europe and the Middle East but slightly reduced in North America, Asia, and Central and South America, with Europe holding the largest at 56% in 2024. Investment returns show $100 invested mid-2019 dropping to $69 by mid-2024, a 31% decrease, while the Standard & Poor’s index would have risen to $208, a 108% increase. The order backlog for Airbus, Boeing, and Comac exceeds 15,000 aircraft, an 18% increase in a year, equivalent to over 9 years of production. Single-aisle (narrow body) aircraft order book represents 12 years of Airbus production and eight for Boeing, while twin-aisle (wide body) orders correspond to about six years. Didatour.it: i viaggi scolastici superano i livelli del 2019

🏫 Italian school tourism has rebounded, surpassing 2019 levels according to Didatour's 2023/2024 survey. Artistic and cultural destinations are chosen by 49% of primary, 77% of lower secondary, and 59% of upper secondary schools. Multi-day trips within Italy are preferred (43% vs. 11% abroad). Secondary schools favor longer trips: 85% of upper and 75% of lower secondary schools, with primary schools at 25% (up from 8% pre-pandemic). Museums are chosen in 14% of trips, while non-traditional destinations account for 25%. Overnight stays have increased to 55% for lower secondary schools. The majority of students (69%) spend around €300 for stays of two days or more, while day trips cost up to €20 (25% of cases) or more (48%). Three-star hotels are the most common accommodation. Travel agencies are used by 57% of respondents, more often by secondary schools. Only 12% utilized the school trip bonus of up to €150. Preferred travel months remain in spring (March and April at 27%, May at 35%).

💰 Switzerland tops the list of the world's most expensive countries with a score of 75, followed by Singapore (72), Hong Kong (65), Iceland (63), Bahamas (62), and the USA (56). Italy ranks 30th with a moderate price level (38), aligned with Malta (39), while Spain (32) and Greece (34), similar to Portugal (33), are among the more affordable countries for living and vacationing. Over half of the pricey destinations listed are in Europe, including Denmark, Netherlands, France, and Germany, alongside the high positions of the UAE and New Zealand.

ISTAT: rincari per tutte le voci del turismo

📈 In June, according to ISTAT, while general service prices fell, hotel and train ticket prices dropped but remained above the 0.8% inflation rate, increasing by 3.4% monthly. Airfares plummeted year-on-year by 10.9%, but rose by 10.6% since May due to seasonal factors. Maritime transport decreased by -5.1% from May, train ticket prices surged from an annual 8.1% to 9.3%, with a 0.2% monthly rise. Codacons reports travel and tourism sectors seeing sharp increases: vacation packages up 20.5% annually, hotel rates by 5.1%, holiday villages and campsites by 6%, other accommodation services by 7.2%. Train travel costs 9.3% more, bus fares increased by 3.9%, with national flights up by 25.2% within a month, and international flights by 13.3%. Parking fees rose by 2.3%, tolls by 1.9%, amusement parks by 4.5%, museums and monuments by 2.3%, and restaurant prices by 3.5%.

Germany led 1995 tourism investment with $65 billion; now 3rd after China and the US, as Italy dropped to below Canada with $33 billion.
